This article lists the most commonly asked questions about the new Yousician look. We started the roll out of the new look in February 2021. Some may already have the new experience, while for others it will be activated throughout the rest of February.

Why did you do this change?
We used your feedback and the latest music-learning research to create a more user-friendly experience.
The new format gives us the flexibility to create missions to better meet your educational needs. We can add themes to describe different components of e.g. Rhythm playing (chords, riffs...), so that you can delve deeper into them if you want to. The flexibility also allows us to add intermediate themes on higher levels, or stop themes naturally when they’ve been covered.
All the missions are unlocked, so that you can move freely to any mission you choose. You can focus on the missions that interest you the most.
What happened to the paths?
The different branches in the learning paths are now merged into a single, theme based one. The missions are tagged with a theme, rather than being organized into paths.
The theme based learning path gives clearer guidance about the skills needed to become a well-rounded musician. If you want to, you can complete all the missions within a level but also have more flexibility to focus on your interests.
What changed in the guitar learning path?
The most noticeable one is the visual change brought by the theme based learning path. We also added new content to Level 0 and 1 missions. The amount of content from level 2 onwards has not changed; it is the same as before. It may look more streamlined but the quantity of content per level is the same.
For example in level 6 in guitar, you can see that the Slides and Fretting skills missions are under the Lead theme. The Fancy chords mission is under the Chords theme and you can find Big riffing under the Riffs theme.
What changed in the piano, ukulele, bass and singing learning paths?
The only change is the visual one brought by the theme based learning path. The amount of content per level is the same. It may look more streamlined but the quantity of content per level for each instrument is the same as before.
For example in level 4 in ukulele, you can see that the Reaching higher and Skipping strings missions are under the Melody theme. You can find the Strumming workshop 1 and Chord workshop 2 missions under the Chords theme.
I used to play a specific path, how do I find the same path now?
Guitar
Lead → Play the Melody missions. This changes to the Lead theme later on in the learning path.
Knowledge → Complete tasks in the Knowledge missions.
Rhythm → Play the Chords, Riffs and Rhythm missions. As you progress, you come across Fingerpicking missions too.
Piano
Classical → Play the Classical missions.
Knowledge → Complete tasks in the Knowledge missions.
Pop → Play the Pop missions.
Bass
Playing → Play the Playing missions.
Knowledge → Complete tasks in the Knowledge missions.
Ukulele
Lead → Play the Melody and Fingerpicking missions.
Rhythm → Play Chords missions.
How do I find where I left off so that I can continue learning?
The learning path view has changed to a horizontal one. You can still find your previous progress, and continue playing where you left off after your last session.
On the Missions view
- you can see the number of tasks included and the number you have completed in a mission (1).
- The status bar indicates the level of completion of the mission (2).
- To access different levels, you can scroll through them or select a level number to jump to a level (3).
How do the changes affect the Guided lesson?
The content in the Learn phase of a Guided lesson follows the new theme-based learning path. The Learn phase continues from where you left off in your previous session. However, with the merged paths, you are also offered content from other themes during your lesson and can’t choose a particular theme. This encourages you to play all themes to become a well-rounded musician. Concentrating on one theme can lead to imbalances and a “getting stuck” feeling later on in your musical journey.
With this example progress, the Learn phase would take you through the Fretboard Workout mission on level 2 in guitar. Your lesson should also include tasks from the Chords themes.
Instead of a Guided lesson, you still have the option to advance through the Missions tab. The learning path is now unlocked, so you can freely move between any missions you want to play.
How do the changes affect my progress?
We made sure that you keep your progress, even with the changes. Your progress on all songs and lessons you’ve already worked on is still in-app waiting for you.
Guitar learners can go and play the new content in levels 0 and 1 if they want to, but can also continue from where they left off in the last session.
How do the changes affect my level?
We made sure that you do not lose your existing level in the transition.
Instead of having individual levels for different topics (like rhythm and lead), you now have one master level. Depending on what you accomplished in the old learning path version, you may see your master level increase.
Why can I access and play a mission that used to be locked?
The learning paths are unlocked for all instruments. You can skip and play any mission or skip to any task within a mission. This change gives you the option to focus on the missions you want to play, skip ahead based on previous playing experience and to follow your interests.
Playing songs stays the same though; you need to unlock the previous song part before playing the next one.
What happened to level certificates?
You get a level certificate after you have completed all the missions in a level. You can also resend certificates to yourself at any time via the Certificate button in the Missions view.
Can I activate the old interface back?
To help our team get new improvements to you faster, we want all users to have a single similar experience while using the app. For this reason, it is not possible to change back to the old interface.
We understand this is a big change but are confident that you'll find the new interface friendly to get used to and will grow to love it as much as we do in no time! :)
