For any Yousician app (Yousician, Piano, Ukulele, or GuitarTuna) to recognize you play, you need to allow access to your device microphone. Check the following instructions on how to do so for the different platforms.
iOS
To enable microphone access open the Settings app on your device. Then go to Privacy & Security → Microphone.
Find the Yousician app on the list and enable microphone access by tapping on the slider (so that it turns green). If the microphone is not working, check these troubleshooting tips from Apple support.
Android
If the Yousician app does not have access to the microphone, you see a pop up to "Allow Yousician to record audio". You can enable the microphone access by tapping "Allow". You can also go to the app properties on your device, and enable microphone access there:
Settings → Apps → Yousician app → Permissions → Microphone.
PC
To select the microphone (built-in or external) as the sound device in the PC settings, you need to do the following:
- Access sound settings by locating the Speaker icon in the notification area in the lower right corner of your desktop screen.
- Right-click the icon to open the menu and select "Sound settings" option.
- Select your input device as the default sound device:
- Check the default output as the speakers/headphones you have (some audio devices can dual as both input and output, so this is just to avoid the conflict).
Disable the echo cancellation/tweak the ambient noise reduction
Windows has its default means of filtering mic/recording device input, which can affect the way the signal is delivered to Yousician. You can do the following to change the settings:
- In the search box on the Taskbar, type Control panel, and select it from the results.
- Select Hardware and Sound from the Control Panel, and then select Sound.
- On the Recording tab, right-click the Default Device, and select Properties.
- Select the Enhancements tab and tick Disable all enhancements. This might not be available as it depends on the PC's audio hardware and drivers.
- Select Apply and OK to save the changes and close the window.

Mac
To set up the microphone on your Mac, go to System preferences → Sound → Input. Select the correct Input device, strum a few times and check the input level (raise if necessary). Then go to Output tab, select speakers / headphones as the default output (some audio devices can dual as both input and output, so this is just to avoid the conflict).
macOS Mojave (10.14 and later)
This version includes a setting which allows you to control access to the microphone by apps and websites. Go to System preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy → Microphone and click the checkbox next to Yousician. Check for more information from Apple about the feature.
